About Kefalonia

Kefalonia (Cephalonia) is the largest of the Ionian Islands. It is located between Lefkada and Zakynthos. The length of the coast is 254 km and on its route you will find countless beautiful, sometimes wild beaches. The capital of the island is the city of Argostoli. From here, we will reach the ferry (30 min, approx. 2.8 euro / person / one way) to Lixouri – the second near the larger city, but calmer and most suitable for families or older and all who want to relax and rest.

Kefalonia is the most mountainous of the Ionian Islands. The highest peak is the Ainos mountain range (the highest peak 1628 m.n.p.m.). There are 17 caves on the island, of which Melissani and Drogarati are best known.

The frightening fact about which we will surely hear being on the island is that it belongs to the most seismically active area. This means that earthquakes are often encountered here. Mainly they cover the area of the Paliki peninsula – that is the area of the city of Lixouri, however, also near Argostoli. Usually, these quakes are not strong, they can be hardly felt by visitors. When choosing the area of the Ionian Sea, we have to adjust to the probability of an earthquake, but the inhabitants are used to it and prepared. It is a fact that they even perceive their absence as a bad sign.

Returning to more pleasant information about the island, I need to name places worth seeing. The famous Myrtos beach, a miracle over miracles, is a must-see point and of course taking a photo against the blue of the sea. Mentioned earlier caves: Melissani and Drogarati as places for tourists from all over the world to come here. Fiskardo, or one of the few places preserved after the great earthquake of 1953. Other places worth seeing are Sami, Agia Efimia and Assos – a picturesque town with traditional houses surrounded by lots of green trees. With Sami you can take a ferry to the nearby island of Ithaca – called the island of Odysseus.

Kefalonia is a very green island, which owes a lot of rainfall during the winter. Rain can fall here even a month without a break. As for the fauna, it is worth seeing the huge Caretta caretta turtles that can be found daily in the port of Argostoli (preferably from the morning hours to 12:00). Other attractions are open-air trips on donkeys or horse riding at the seaside.
